The place

An Edwardian semi-detached house on a suburban London street: generous rooms at the front, a cramped back addition, and a long garden with no plan.

The brief

A family kitchen and dining room that opens to the garden, a study, and a garden designed as carefully as the house, with a studio at the end of it.

The design

The back addition is replaced by one full-width room clad in open-jointed larch, lit by a long rooflight over the kitchen along the side wall. A large glazed pivot door sits on the axis of a new stone-edged rill that runs the length of the garden between clipped hedges to a small larch studio at the end. At the front, the bay is repaired and the drive resurfaced in gravel behind the hedge.

One axis from the kitchen table to the studio door.

Drawings

Plans, elevations and details

Each plan sits beside a view of the spaces it shows; the drawing set follows, from the exploded axonometric to a 1:20 detail.

Landscape

The garden, room by room

The garden is one composition with the house: a stone terrace at the pivot door, a narrow rill on the same axis, lawn either side held by clipped hedges, and a studio that closes the view.
